School Prefects
Whilst the School Council members and House Captains are chosen democratically by children, the senior staff identify and select prefects. Prefects are awarded gold badges in a Headmaster’s assembly and also given a prefect’s tie which they can choose to wear as they wish instead of their usual house tie.
From the Latin, ‘praeficere’, ‘to lead’ children are selected for their ability to lead others and are, indeed, pupil leaders. Prefects set an example to the school through exemplary good manners; good citizenship and through correct wearing of the school uniform.
Role of the Prefects
Prefects are, in a sense, junior members of staff and are expected to take their role seriously. Their responsibilities include contributing to the school newsletter, assisting in the management of the school; organising recycling; showing visitors around the school; working in the school office and taking telephone messages; managing the sound and lighting systems in the Great Hall; assisting at parents evenings and much more.
Of course, they are offered privileges which include working with the local police on road safety initiatives, having a special tie and badge, being allowed to be indoors when they wish, work as mentors with other children, and fortnightly meetings with the headmaster for tea and cakes!
We congratulate pupils on their achievement and wish them every success. Children from Year 6 may be added to the current group of prefects as the year goes on, the list is never closed.
The Head Boy and Head Girl meet with the Headmaster regularly to discuss school developments. A Year 6 member of staff works with the Head Boy and Girl to timetable prefect responsibilities.
